Who qualifies?

Any 4-H’er taking a market lamb or breeding sheep project for the first time.

How do I enter?

Write an essay on the care of a market lamb. The essay must be at least 100 words long. Mail your entry to:

Sheep Blog Offers Advice on Keeping the Flock Healthy and Profitable

If you’re seeking the latest tips on when to give your sheep haircuts and what to feed lambs to be sold for someone’s dinner table, you can consult a newly-revived Ohio sheep blog.

The Ohio State University Sheep Team blog offers easily digestible doses of research findings on raising sheep, keeping them safe and healthy, and the business profitable. After a six-year run ending in 2014, the sheep blog was relaunched in August 2017.

Jim Cluff Memorial Starter Flock

The Ohio Cheviot Breeders Association (OCBA) is seeking applicants for the Jim Cluff Memorial Starter Flock Award.

The OCBA started the contest in 1994 to award a starter flock to an Ohio youth of up to 17 years of age. The purpose of the award is to introduce the youth to the enjoyment of raising and owning a purebred Cheviot sheep, as well as encouraging the growth of new Cheviot breeders in Ohio.

The contest winner will receive the following: a one year membership in the (OCBA), one bred ewe the first year, one ram the second year and in the third year the youth will donate a lamb to continue the award.

The application deadline is September 30, 2017.

2017 Stark County Sheep Skillathon

The sheep skill-a-thon will be on Sat, April 22, 2017 at the Fairgrounds.

4H Youth members should plan to attend the following time slots.

  • Last names beginning with A-M will start at 9am.
  • Last names that begin with N-Z starts at 10am.

There will also be 3 sessions for Quality Assurance at 9am, 10am or 11am.

2017 4H Poultry and Sheep Opportunities

1.      2017 Youth Poultry ClinicMarch 25 at Fisher Auditorium, OSU/OARDC, Wooster. Registrations are to be postmarked by Friday, March 17. Space is limited. Jarrod Snell, Assistant Poultry Operations Manager,, is the contact person. The link to this information is posted at on the Calendar of Events page.

There will be a statewide Quality Assurance session at this Youth Poultry Clinic. We will also be discussing the Veterinary Feed Directive and Prescription Drugs as they pertain to youth with poultry projects.

2.      The Ohio Corriedale Club is offering two Corriedale ewes to help a 4-H or FFA member start their own flock. The attached flyer is to be completed and returned to Jodie Duffy,,  Ohio Corriedale Club, by March 15.

Market Lamb Clinic and Quality Assurance

Stark 4-H Youth (and surrounding counties) are invited and welcome to attend:

Please see the attached flyer for a Market Lamb Clinic which will be hosted by the Holmes County Sheep Committee on March 11th at Harvest Ridge in Holmes County. As part of the clinic, Nicole Swavel, 4-H Program Assistant in Wayne County, will also be teaching Quality Assurance. This event will be a great opportunity for 4-H youth interested in Market Lamb to learn more and connect with other youth. Stark County youth who attend the QA must receive assigned certificate/letter that they attended and submit to the Stark County Jr Fair Coordinator, Jerry Reynolds.

Holmes County would love to see 4-H youth from other counties attend and take advantage of this event!
