Food Animal Products Academy: June 29 – July 1, 2010

March 2nd, 2010

The Ohio State University Department of Animal Sciences and 4-H Youth Development are offering a Food Animal Products Academy (FAPA) for 4-H members, who are interested in animal agriculture and the products they produce. This academy will be held June 29-July 1, 2010, on the Columbus campus of The Ohio State University. Designed to introduce participants to food animal product development and careers in food animal industries, the Food Animal Products Academy will provide youth hands-on learning activities about animal agriculture through the food animal industry; product development, marketing and distribution; food preparation; and more. Participants will watch demonstrations, prepare meals, and tour businesses to learn about the food animal industry.

4-H members ages 14 years and older at the time of FAPA who have been actively involved in projects taken for food production are encouraged to apply. Examples of food animal projects include beef, sheep, swine, goats, dairy, and poultry.

Youth must pay a $100.00 participation fee.  Meals, dormitory housing, and resource materials are paid for through an Ohio 4-H Foundation Grant.

The application deadline is May 14. Space is limited to 50 participants, who will be notified of their acceptance by May 21. The $100.00 participation fee will be due no later than June 4 and must be paid in full at that time. National Military Childcare/Youth Development Internship Program

March 2nd, 2010

A new partnership between the Cooperative Extension System and the Department of Defense has provided the funding for a national, military childcare/youth development internship program. Through this initiative, students and recent graduates will have the opportunity to develop professional skills in childcare and youth development through practical work experience with military children, youth, and families.  Interns’ compensation will include travel to and from the internship site and housing for the duration of the placement. Interns will be placed on military installations across the United States with some opportunities for international placement.

The Military Extension Internship Program is accepting applications through March 26th for internships beginning August 8th and lasting through the fall. More information and application materials can be found at www.extension.purdue.edu/military <http://www.extension.purdue.edu/military> , and we are happy to answer any questions you may have.   Specific questions re: the internships may be referred to: Amy Schott, Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service, aeschott@purdue.edu

Producers Sell Local Food to Restaurants & Grocery Stores

March 2nd, 2010

Are the producers in your area prepared to sell local food to restaurants, grocery stores and other wholesale buyers?

If not, help them take advantage of the growing interest in local foods by inviting them to the Retail Ready workshops in Ohio.

The first workshop is Tuesday, March 9th at the Ohio 4-H Center.  The other workshops are in March and April in various areas throughout the state ˆ see attached.

Retail Ready is a new program the Direct Marketing Team is bringing to Ohio, in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Agriculture, local partners,∑ ODA is providing the funding and coordination for this initial program roll-out and the program is evolving through the national MarketMaker network, the Ohio Food Policy Council, Market Connections Task Force and others. A number of Extension personnel have been involved in the development of the program and the plans for this initial roll-out.

Here is a brief overview from Tim Woods ˆ Univ. of KY ˆ who initiated this program.
Retail Ready is a program designed to facilitate best commercial business practices between growers and various retail markets.  Growth in demand for local foods, together with the growth in direct marketing by smaller-scale producers amplifies the need for grower training on what buyers are needing to more readily fit into their buying conventions.  Most buyers are anxious to work with local growers to market their local products, but have also expressed frustration at the lack of grower awareness of their preferred buying practices.  This training should help growers and retailers build more successful market relationships.  Retail Ready training was developed with generous assistance from the National MarketMaker program and the University of Arkansas Applied Sustainability Center.

Producers will evaluate their readiness by reviewing resources and a checklist of various topics related to how to package, label, price, invoice, deliver, meet quality and insurance standards, and much more.
Hope that you and your producers can join us for one of these workshops.

2010 Ohio 4-H Dairy Calendar Updates

February 25th, 2010

2010 Updated Dairy 4-H Calendar Dates

Rules and registration forms for the Ohio 4-H Dairy Judging Contest are now posted on the dairy page. Please note there are changes in the contest and the location of the event.  There are many details that will require some extra attention from coaches and volunteers.  Most of these changes deal with the fact that Spring Dairy Expo lost some of their state funding for 2010.  Please be assured that we are all working together to insure a successful event.

Also on March 20th, I will sponsor a dairy judging clinic here on campus.  That information is also available on the “Calendar of Events” page.  This clinic will help to prepare participants for the contest.  There is a new PDCA Dairy Unified Scorecard to educate and inform youth and adults about.  Some portions of this day are dedicated to coaches only.

One more update… The 2010 4-H Dairy Calendar has had some changes.  It has been updated on the web page and I have attached it to this message.

First off, we will be having TWO dairy skillathons at the Ohio State Fair.  That date, August 4th, has been added to the second rotation of the fair when Brown Swiss, Jersey, and Guernsey youth are at the fair.

Second update is the date change in Ohio’s Dairy Quiz Bowl…it will now be held on July 2nd (instead of July 12th) due to some renovations of the Animal Science Arena

Dairy COWreers program on April 10th has changed into a recruitment event as well as a 4-H program.  It is shaping up to be something quite special with a widespread industry focus.  It is FREE! ADA and ODPA are the generous sponsors.  More details on this next week.
