Acres of Adventure Curriculum

Looking for ways to introduce young people to the world of agriculture and life science?

Interested in expanding your collection of fun-filled science activities that are keyed to national science educational standards?

Then this curriculum is for you.

This uniquely focused activity guide was developed in cooperation with curriculum experts from the National Consortium of State Agriculture in the Classroom programs, Extension 4-H professionals, and specialists from the field ofchildcare education. Its intent is to promote agricultural literacy among young people during out-of-school time while developing their understanding, appreciation and application of science through a variety of hands-on agriculturally based activities.

Each book in this two volume series features 40 child tested activities that can be administered in a 30 minute period with additional ideas for extending the activity time. Each activity is easily transferable across 3rd – 5th grade audiences and requires minimal resources and preparation time, making them ideal for providers with limited experience and content knowledge. In addition, the activities are cross-referenced to important days and celebrations contained in an easy-to-use school year calendar.

ATTENTION ALL 4-H MEMBERS TAKING SHEEP PROJECTS:
Stark County Jr. Fair Sheep Clinic

WHEN?
May 16, 2009 at 9:00 am

WHERE?
In the Sheep/Swine arena if the weather is nice.
If it is cool or rainy, we’ll move to the show arena in the horse barn behind the Junior Fairboard meeting room.

WHO NEEDS TO BE THERE?
Anyone who is taking a sheep project is invited to attend,
however, it is strongly recommended that first and second year project members to attend. Parents are invited, too!
We also need some older members to help
with the hands on portion of the clinic.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?
We will be discussing all the things needed to begin a sheep project…
What equipment is needed?
Things to know before choosing a feeding program.
How to tell if a lamb is not feeling well, and what to do.
 Vaccines and health management programs.
Basic handling techniques will be practiced on real sheep.
How to begin preparing for the show.
And, for those interested in beginning a Born & Raised Market Lamb Project for next year, some sheep breeding tips and dates to get started.

EMERGENCY ALERT! SWINE FLU INFO

Monday, April 27th, 2009

CDC has announced twenty confirmed cases of swine flu reported in people in the U.S. CDC is working closely with state and local officials to investigate the human cases of swine influenza.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO COMMUNICATE THAT THERE IS NO HUMAN INFLUENZA PANDEMIC AT THIS TIME.

IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO SHARE THE NEWS THAT HUMANS CANNOT CONTRACT THE SWINE FLU FROM EATING PORK.  The flu is a respiratory disease, similar to any other flu, and can only be contracted while in direct contact with another infected person (or pig).

OSU Extension plays a key role in the effort to educate the public and will help to limit the potential negative impact to the agricultural industry.

Recommendations for Prevention:

•CDC recommends the following precautionary measures for people residing in these states.

•Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

•Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.

•Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

•If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

•Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

•There is no vaccine available at this time, so it is important for people living in these areas to take steps to prevent spreading the virus to others.

•If people are ill, they should stay at home and limit contact with others.

•Healthy residents living in these areas should take everyday preventive actions.
