The Ohio Spot Breeders, in order to promote the advancement of the breed, will give to 4-H or FFA members a Spotted gilt. Recipients of donor gilts must show the gilt at the 2009 Ohio State Fair in the donor-gilt class and in the Junior Spot Show. Recipients must also breed the gilt to a registered Spot boar for the first breeding and farrow at least one litter of purebred spots; this litter is to be registered with the National Spotted Swine Record. The Ohio Spot Breeders will try to assist any of the recipients with breeding, either by providing semen or breeding service when possible. If the student does not fulfill the contract, he will pay the donor $150. In order to show at the Ohio State Fair in the Jr. swine breeding shows, all youth must carry the swine breeding 4-H project (project # 140) in their county 4-H club regardless if the county has a Breeding Swine Project at their fair.
To qualify for a donor gilt, an applicant must be in 4-H or FFA and submit an essay on the topic “Why I want to own a Spot Gilt.” Essay must describe the facility that the gilt will be raised in and the area where you plan to farrow the pigs. Please include pictures of your facilities. Essay should also give history of 4-H or FFA activities and accomplishments and any other extra curricular activities (school, church, social, etc.)
All essays must be received by April 3, 2009. Essays will be judged and the donor or a representative from the Ohio Spot Breeders will contact each possible winner. Final winners will be notified by May 1 and all gilts must be picked up by May 15. (It will be the responsibility of the student to pick the gilt up at the donor’s farm.)

The CLOVER reading program offers Stark County 4-H youth a chance to earn recognition for learning more about their project areas, improve their reading ability and help their club by performing reading-related community service. Prizes will be awarded at Extravaganza. The county’s top CLOVER point earners will receive a prize! All Stark County 4-H youth (age 5 – 18) are eligible to enroll in CLOVER.
Here’s how it works:
The CLOVER registration form is available from the Stark County Extension Office. Only one form per club is required. Interested 4-H members sign up at club meetings. The form is then returned to the Extension office by the March 15, 2009 deadline.
The reading program begins March 15, 2009. Youth earn points by reading age/ability appropriate books, magazine articles and textbook chapters on their project area(s), and their 4-H project resource manual. They can read for personal enjoyment or to learn more about their project area. Reading-related community service also earns points.
Youth then record what they read along with a brief synopsis on a CLOVER book report form. (Forms will be mailed to all clubs who have youth registered in CLOVER). Completed forms must be turned in to the 4-H Extension Office by Friday, June 19, 2009. (You only need 25 points to complete the program – each book related to the youth’s project area earns 5 points.)
Cloverbuds do not earn points. They participate in the CLOVER program by reading 5 books or having 5 books read to them. (The ability to read is not necessary for participation in the CLOVER program.) All participating Cloverbud youth will receive a CLOVER award ribbon.
Awards for all CLOVER participants completing the program will be presented at Extravaganza. The awards ceremony usually starts between 12:30 and 1:30pm.
All youth registered in the program are also invited to enter the CLOVER Poster Challenge. Posters are judged by how well the youth incorporates reading into the Stark County Jr. Fair theme. Posters must be turned in to the 4-H office, Laura Miller or Bridget Coffman by 5pm August 14, 2009. Posters will be displayed in the CLOVER reading booth during the Stark County Fair.

The Ohio Corriedale Club is encouraging youth that are beginning a sheep breeding project to consider raising Corriedales. Corriedales are ideal for youth breeding sheep projects because they are easy to care for, have a docile temperament, and are relatively inexpensive to purchase.
The Ohio Corriedale Club is offering a pair of Corriedale ewes to a 4-H or FFA member that is interested in starting their own flock. The Corriedale Club will provide two (2) ewes for the member, registered in the member’s name, before May 1, 2009. The Club will also assist the member in management decisions and answer questions regarding the project throughout the year. The ewes will become a part of the member’s 4-H or FFA project and will be exhibited at the Ohio State Fair Junior Corriedale Show and the recipient’s county fair.
Any 4-H or FFA members interested in applying for the ewes should submit an application form along with a short essay about their experience before April 1, 2009. The Corriedale Club will select one (1) member to receive the ewes and contact the recipient before April 15, 2009. Application forms are available by clicking on the sheepapp link below. For more information, contact Jodie Duffy, Ogio Corriedale Club, 4279 Easton Road, Hamilton, OH 45013 or email at duffyjy@msn.com.
