Q.:  Can guinea pigs catch a cold from a human?
A.:  Yes. If you have a cold try not to handles your animal at that time. If you have to, do not breathe on them and wash your hands thoroughly before you handle them.

Q.:  Do you have to give your guinea pigs any special nutrients?
A.:  Yes. Guinea pigs require Vitamin C. You can give it to them by feeding them vegetables or fruits high in vitamin C or by providing them with Vitamin C drops in their water. Feed vegetables or fruits at least 3 times a week. Those high in vitamin C are parsley, turnip greens, kale leaves with stems, broccoli, orange with peels and spinach.

Q.:  How many babies will my guinea pig have?
A.:  Anywhere from 1-6. Sometimes one, rarely over 6. The average is 3-4 babies.

Q.:  Do I need to take my guinea pig to the vet?
A.:  Guinea pigs do not need to get any type of shots. Occasionally  they will catch a cold and you may want to try to find a vet. Most vets do not take care of guinea pigs. If you do find one, let them know that guinea pigs are severely allergic to penicillin — usually resulting in death.

Q.:  How many breeds of cavy are there?
A.:  13 breeds. They are: Abyssinian, Abyssiniah Satin, American, American Satin, Coronet, Peruvian, Peruvian Satin, Silkie, Silkie Satin, Texel, White Crested, Teddy and  Teddy Satin.

Q.: Can I feed carrots and lettuce to my rabbit?
A.: It is best not to. Feed them a well balanced rabbit pellet, it has all the essential vitamins and minerals that a rabbit needs.

Q.: How much light does a rabbit need to have per day to encourage breeding successfully?
A.:  At least 14 hours per day, non-stop light.

Q.: How big should my rabbit cage be?
A.: The size of the cage is determined by the size of the rabbit. Rule of thumb is to allow 3/4 square foot (.75 sq. ft.)  per pound of mature body weight of floor space.

Q.: Do I need to take my rabbit to the veterinarian?
A.: Generally it is hard to find a veterinarian that will see rabbits. If you can find one, it is good to establish a veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR) in case you have a problem. Rabbits do not need shots. You can prevent most problems by following a good sanitation program.

Q.: What is the best breed of rabbit?
A.: The one you are comfortable with. Research the differences between breeds. Pick the breed that best suits you. Think of the size, grooming requirements, space needed for housing and ease of handling. Do you research!
